Gambling Be Gone!

Tonight, while doing my random check of news sites, I stumbled across this article...

At first, I was thinking it was some random website that was ripping on people and was no big deal. WRONG.

I am so enthusiastic to find out the US Department of Justice has seized ALL online gambling sites and therefore online gambling is no longer allowed in the United States. Why is this so thrilling to me? I'll tell you...

I've never been a fan of gambling at all. I witnessed someone in my own family come to their demise at the poker table. Possibly, even their death. Then, I married M and witnessed his addiction first hand. When I first met with his mom while he was deployed, she stressed to me how "we needed to get him off of there." For me, I thought it was just his outlet of choice while he was in Iraq and I wasn't going to encourage him to stop. Then, when he came home and I witnessed it firsthand, I knew it was a massive problem. It became a serious point of contention for us. Eventually, I decided to join him as opposed to throwing fits and trying to take something away from him that was a passion. We did have fun playing together, but it was never for real money. Just for fun. I don't have a problem with that. It's the crazy cash games that were the problem. It sickened me to know how much money he was putting into online poker. To this day, I still don't know or understand his winnings vs his losses. I've seen a website that analyzes all of his hands and from what I see, everything is in the red. MAJORLY.

Regardless, I think it's a dangerous habit that gets out of control. M had strong desires to be "SuperNova Elite" on Poker Stars, which is the highest level you can achieve. The last time I saw him, he told me he had been playing behind my back the whole time and he planned on playing in the WSOP and going pro. Oy. That's been one of my biggest fears. Not that it plays a part in my life anymore, but because I care...I know that's no way to really live a life. I worried he would take all of his disability, social security, etc. and gamble it away.

Truth be told, this won't end gambling. More cash games will start turning up. Where there's a will, there's a way. I'm just honestly so relieved the government has put a stop to online gambling for now. It really, really destroys lives.
